One plain pretzel is not an emergency, but the salt load and hard texture make pretzels a poor dog snack.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Pretzels are basically baked salt — their signature coating is a sodium bath dogs do not need, since their food already supplies all required sodium. Large amounts risk salt toxicosis, and hard pretzels are sharp enough to scratch the mouth or throat when gulped. Flavored and chocolate-covered pretzels add onion powder or theobromine to the list.

How to serve it safely

Keep the snack bowl out of reach and offer a dog-safe crunchy treat instead. One stolen pretzel is fine; never hand them out.

Warning signs to watch for

Salty binges bring excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, wobbliness and, in severe cases, tremors.

When to call the vet

Call your vet if your dog eats a large quantity of pretzels and becomes very thirsty, vomits or seems unsteady.

Common questions

Are unsalted pretzels okay?

Marginally better, but they are still hard, sharp, starchy junk. Unsalted removes the salt risk, not the reason not to share.

What about soft pretzels?

The salt crystals on top carry the same sodium issue, and the dough is starchy filler. A small plain piece is the most you should ever share.
