Cooked oysters in tiny amounts are okay — raw oysters are a genuine infection risk.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Oysters are rich in zinc, iron and protein, but they filter large volumes of water and can concentrate vibrio bacteria and other pathogens, which cooking kills. They are also naturally salty, and raw oysters have caused real poisonings in dogs.

How to serve it safely

Only a fully cooked, plain, shucked oyster, chopped small — one is enough. Never raw, never Rockefeller, never with hot sauce.

Warning signs to watch for

Raw oysters may cause vomiting, diarrhea, fever and lethargy within a day or two.

When to call the vet

If your dog eats raw oysters and becomes ill, see your vet and mention the raw shellfish.

Common questions

Can dogs eat smoked canned oysters?

Rinse the brine off and keep it to one — smoked versions are heavily salted.

Why are raw oysters worse than raw fish?

Oysters filter huge volumes of water and concentrate whatever is in it, including bacteria — their risk profile is higher than most seafood.
