Can Dogs Eat Oregano?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Oregano’s essential oils — carvacrol and thymol — give it flavor and antimicrobial punch, but the same oils irritate canine stomachs when the herb is overused. Dried oregano is more concentrated than fresh, and oregano essential oil should never be given to dogs at all.
How to serve it safely
A small pinch of fresh or dried oregano in home-cooked food occasionally. Never oregano oil, and never pizza or pasta sauce, which adds garlic and onion.
Warning signs to watch for
Too much causes drooling, vomiting and diarrhea; essential oil exposure can cause more serious GI and neurological irritation.
When to call the vet
If your dog eats oregano essential oil or a large amount of the herb and starts vomiting, call your vet.
Common questions
Is oregano oil a natural antibiotic for dogs?
Do not DIY it. Concentrated oregano oil irritates dogs’ mouths and guts — antibiotics need a vet’s prescription.
Fresh or dried oregano?
Fresh is milder, so it is the better choice when you want to share a pinch.
