Can Dogs Eat Kefir?
Why it’s fine
Kefir fermentation consumes most of the lactose in milk, which makes it far easier to digest than plain milk for lactose-sensitive dogs, and its live cultures may support gut health. Choose unflavored milk kefir: flavored versions carry sugar and sometimes xylitol, and water kefir works too. Start small — even low-lactose dairy can loosen stools at first.
How to serve it safely
Add one teaspoon for small dogs up to a tablespoon for large dogs onto food, and build slowly. The label should read milk, cultures and nothing else.
When to call the vet
If your dog is immunocompromised or on medication, ask your vet before adding live-culture foods.
Common questions
Is kefir better than yogurt for dogs?
Often, yes — kefir carries more probiotic strains and less lactose. Both need to be plain and unsweetened to be worth sharing.
Can dogs drink flavored kefir?
No — fruit flavors add sugar, and some products use xylitol. Plain, unsweetened kefir only.
