A small piece is fine, but imitation crab is highly processed and salty — real crab it is not.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Imitation crab is surimi — minced white fish, usually pollack, processed with starch, sugar, salt and flavorings. It is not toxic, but it offers far less protein and far more sodium and additives than real crab, and some brands add paprika or other seasonings.

How to serve it safely

One or two small pieces, plain and thawed, occasionally. Check the label for onion or garlic powder and skip those brands.

Warning signs to watch for

Large amounts cause vomiting, diarrhea and thirst from the sodium load.

When to call the vet

If your dog eats a whole pack and becomes very thirsty or vomits, call your vet.

Common questions

Is imitation crab safe for dogs with fish allergies?

No — it is fish paste, usually pollack. Fish-allergic dogs should avoid it entirely.

Is it actually crab?

No — it is minced fish shaped and flavored to resemble crab. The nutrition is much closer to processed fish sticks than to shellfish.
