Can Dogs Eat Chia Seeds?
Why it’s fine
Chia seeds provide plant omega-3s, fiber, protein and antioxidants, and they are non-toxic to dogs. The one caution is texture: dry chia absorbs many times its weight in water and swells, so large dry servings can clump and cause discomfort — a problem solved by soaking and small portions.
How to serve it safely
Soak one quarter to one teaspoon of seeds in water until gelled, then stir into food. Always provide fresh water alongside.
When to call the vet
If a dog eats a large amount of dry chia and then seems bloated, thirsty or uncomfortable, call your vet and mention how much was eaten.
Common questions
Can dogs eat dry chia seeds?
Small amounts sprinkled on food are fine, but soaking is better — dry seeds swell with moisture in the stomach. Never a big dry spoonful.
How much chia is safe daily?
A quarter teaspoon for small dogs up to a teaspoon for large ones, mixed into a meal. More just adds calories and fiber bulk.
