Can Dogs Eat Butter?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Butter is around 80% fat with trace lactose, so it packs a large number of calories into a small pat and strains the pancreas in anything more than a lick. Buttered foods — toast, popcorn, vegetables — sneak fat into the diet without the dog or owner noticing. It offers nothing dog food lacks.
How to serve it safely
If your dog licks a bit of butter, let it pass. Never add butter to dog food, and keep butter dishes and sticks out of counter-surfing range.
Warning signs to watch for
Eating a quantity of butter causes vomiting, diarrhea and, in sensitive dogs, hunched belly pain from pancreatitis within a day or two.
When to call the vet
If your dog eats a whole stick or shows repeated vomiting after fatty food, call your vet — pancreatitis needs treatment.
Common questions
My dog ate a stick of butter — now what?
Expect diarrhea and possibly vomiting as it moves through. Call your vet if vomiting becomes repeated or the belly seems painful — a whole stick is a pancreatitis test for small dogs.
Is margarine safer than butter?
No — margarine swaps dairy fat for processed oils and often adds salt. Neither belongs in a dog’s bowl.
