Better to avoid it. Avocado carries persin, and the pit, skin and high fat each add their own problems.

Why it’s a problem

Avocado contains persin, a fungicidal toxin concentrated in the pit, skin and leaves; dogs are more resistant than birds, but larger amounts still cause stomach upset. The pit is a serious choking and blockage hazard, and the fat load can trigger pancreatitis.

How to serve it safely

Keep guacamole, avocado toast and whole avocados away from dogs. If a few bites of ripe flesh were stolen, the risk is low — watch and report.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting and diarrhea within hours of eating much flesh; a swallowed pit shows as gagging, vomiting, loss of appetite or straining.

When to call the vet

Call your vet if the pit was swallowed or if vomiting persists — blockage and pancreatitis both need professional care.

Common questions

My dog ate a slice of avocado toast — is it bad?

The avocado flesh is the least dangerous part, but the toast often has onion or garlic seasoning. Check what was on it and call your vet if unsure.

Why is avocado worse for some animals?

Birds, rabbits and horses are highly sensitive to persin; dogs are relatively resistant, which is why avocado is harmful rather than outright toxic for them.
