Can Dogs Eat Almonds?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Dogs do not chew nuts well, and whole almonds can lodge in the esophagus or intestine, especially in small dogs. Their high fat invites pancreatitis, and salted or flavored versions pile on sodium and seasonings. A licked nut rarely harms; a handful can.
How to serve it safely
If you must share, give one or two plain unsalted almonds to a large dog — but safer treats exist. Keep bowls of nuts out of reach.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, gagging or blockage signs such as straining and loss of appetite after eating a quantity of nuts.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if a small dog eats several almonds or any dog shows symptoms of a blockage.
Common questions
Why is almond butter treated differently than almonds?
It spreads and digests more easily than whole nuts, but check the label — some almond butters contain xylitol, which is deadly.
My dog ate trail mix with almonds — should I worry?
Check the other ingredients first. Raisins, macadamia nuts or xylitol candy in the mix would make it an emergency.
