Can Cats Eat Nutella?
Why it’s a problem
Nutella is cocoa, sugar and palm oil built around hazelnuts, so every spoonful carries theobromine that cats clear slowly. The dose per lick is smaller than in dark chocolate, but cats are small animals and the sugar and fat add stomach upset on top.
How to serve it safely
Keep jars tightly closed and clean knife and spoon between uses — cats will lick a left-out utensil clean.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, tremors and rapid breathing within hours; smaller licks may cause only stomach upset.
When to call the vet
Call a vet or pet poison hotline for any meaningful Nutella exposure, describing the amount and your cat’s weight.
Common questions
Is it mainly the hazelnuts that are the problem?
No — the nuts are the least of it. Cocoa, sugar and palm oil do the damage.
