Can Cats Eat Leeks & Chives?
Why it’s a problem
The whole Allium family — onions, garlic, leeks, chives, scallions, shallots — contains thiosulfate compounds that destroy feline red blood cells. Chives are a particular trap because they grow in gardens and garnish baked potatoes and cream cheese, looking harmless.
How to serve it safely
Keep all allium vegetables and dishes away from cats, including chive garnishes, onion dips and leek soups.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, drooling and abdominal pain, then lethargy, pale gums, rapid breathing and dark urine as anemia develops over days.
When to call the vet
Contact your vet as soon as ingestion is known — delayed anemia makes "watch and wait" risky.
Common questions
Are chives dangerous in small garnish amounts?
Cats are highly sensitive, and repeated small doses still damage red blood cells. Treat any allium as off-limits.
