Fully cooked kidney beans are safe in small amounts — raw or undercooked ones are not.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Raw kidney beans are one of the most lectin-rich foods commonly stored in homes, and phytohemagglutinin causes severe vomiting even in small doses. Once boiled thoroughly the lectins are destroyed, leaving a starchy bean a cat can only digest in tiny amounts.

How to serve it safely

Only well-boiled, plain, unsalted kidney beans, a teaspoon at most. Never soak-and-serve, and keep dry bean bags out of reach.

Warning signs to watch for

Raw or undercooked beans cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain within hours; too many cooked beans cause gas and loose stools.

When to call the vet

See a vet promptly if a cat eats raw kidney beans — vomiting and dehydration can escalate quickly.

Common questions

Are canned kidney beans safe?

They are fully cooked, which is good, but rinse them well to remove salt, and still keep the portion tiny.
