Hazelnuts are not toxic to cats, but their size and fat make them a poor snack.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Plain hazelnuts contain no known feline toxin, so a stolen piece is not an emergency. They are still high in fat, which upsets a carnivore’s stomach, and a whole hazelnut is roughly the size of a cat’s airway — a genuine choking risk.

How to serve it safely

If a cat wants a taste, offer a small fragment of a plain unsalted hazelnut rarely. Skip chocolate-covered and sugared versions entirely.

Warning signs to watch for

Gagging or choking while chewing, or vomiting and loose stools after eating several nuts.

When to call the vet

Call your vet immediately if a cat chokes or cannot swallow, and promptly for repeated vomiting after any nut.

Common questions

What about hazelnut spread?

No — chocolate-hazelnut spreads bring cocoa, sugar and palm oil along with the nuts. See the separate entry for that product.
