Goat milk still contains lactose — less than cow’s milk, but enough to upset many cats.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Goat milk is popularly believed to be lactose-free, which is false: it contains somewhat less lactose than cow’s milk, and most adult cats still lack the enzyme to digest it. Fermented goat milk is gentler, and commercial "cat milk" products are the versions actually designed for feline digestion.

How to serve it safely

If you want to offer milk, choose purpose-made lactose-free cat milk over raw goat milk. A spoonful of plain goat milk occasionally is the maximum.

Warning signs to watch for

Diarrhea, gas and vomiting within 8 to 12 hours in lactose-sensitive cats.

When to call the vet

Persistent diarrhea after any milk warrants a vet visit, especially in kittens, who dehydrate fast.

Common questions

Can kittens drink goat milk?

No. Kittens need their mother’s milk or a proper milk replacer — goat milk does not match feline nutritional needs.
