Can Cats Eat Cat Grass?
Why it’s fine
Cat grass is grown from wheat, oat, rye or barley seeds, and it is completely safe. Grazing is natural feline behavior: the fiber helps fur pass through the gut, and chewing it may even induce vomiting to expel hairballs — messy but normal.
How to serve it safely
Grow a pot at home from cat-grass seed so it is pesticide-free, and offer it freely. Place it near food, away from any houseplants that are not cat-safe.
When to call the vet
If vomiting after grass becomes frequent or the grass is never vomited with, mention it at your next vet visit.
Common questions
Why does my cat vomit after eating grass?
Some cats vomit partly because the undigested blades tickle the stomach — it often helps expel hair. Occasional grass vomit is normal; frequent vomiting is a vet topic.
Is cat grass the same as catnip?
No. Cat grass is a cereal grain seedling for chewing; catnip is an herb that triggers euphoria. Many cats enjoy both for different reasons.
