Can Cats Eat Beef Jerky?
Why it’s a problem
A strip of jerky concentrates a huge sodium dose, and most recipes include garlic and pepper; sweetened versions may contain xylitol. The dense, chewy texture is also hard for a small mouth, and teriyaki or peppered varieties are worse still.
How to serve it safely
Keep jerky bags sealed and out of counter-surfing range. If you want a dried treat, buy one made specifically for cats.
Warning signs to watch for
Excessive thirst, vomiting, wobbliness and tremors from the salt load; if garlic was included, pale gums and dark urine can appear days later.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if a cat eats several strips, especially teriyaki or sweetened jerky — check the label for xylitol.
Common questions
What about plain homemade jerky?
Without salt or spices it is lower risk, but most home recipes still salt the meat. A tiny unsalted piece is the most you should ever allow.
